Weddings With Style On Vancouver Island (Nanaimo, Parksville, Tofino, Victoria)

Marcus is one of the most experienced wedding and portrait photographers on Vancouver Island. He has worked for corporate and international wedding clientèle for over 20 years. His commissioned assignments have appeared in magazines, publications and advertisements in Canada, the U.S and Germany.

Most of his assignments are in the Mid Island region of Nanaimo, Parksville and Tofino. For special events such as weddings and family portraits, he also travels to the Mainland as well as Victoria and the Gulf Islands.

For weddings and portraiture work, he chooses to work exclusively with film with an emphasis on high-end black & white photography.

His masterful use of black & white film, gives his prints a depth uncommon in today’s digital world. Many of todays photographs lack the sparkle and beautiful tonal richness of his expertly handcrafted black & white silver prints. His wedding photographs are of the same fine quality, as his photographic exhibition prints.

The timeless medium of black & white photography has made a tremendous comeback in recent years and is requested frequently by his clients. Most of his weddings couples prefer a mix of 50/50 colour and black & white photography. Sometimes a complete, all black & white photography coverage is requested by clients who have a special appreciation for high-end black & white photography.

There are a few photographers who make the digital cameras they own the focus of their advertising. For a true professional, the equipment is only of secondary importance. To master and understand the harmony between subject and light, is of much greater significance than what equipment is used. It’s his artistic eye and skill, that turns an ordinary photograph into a work of art.

Unfortunately, much of today’s wedding photography is a tribute to poor photographic style. The trendy ‘photo journalistic’ approach of shooting hundreds and hundreds of photographs at a wedding, does not necessarily guarantee beautiful images. It is merely a collection of a massive amount of very similar shots. There is a time at every wedding for this photographic style but it should be applied selectively. Of course, spontaneous wedding photographs of a happy celebration should never be missed.

Not every person is blessed with natural grace. If a bride is not a ‘natural’ in front of the camera, the so called unobtrusive photo journalistic style will not be kind to her. If Marcus feels that the bride needs a little help, he will work patiently with her and give advice so she will look beautiful and graceful. It is astounding what transition can take place when he gives her the confidence that she will look fantastic in her wedding photographs. It is easy to photograph those who are by nature photogenic, but it takes a pro to make the average person look like a model.

‘Casual elegance’ would be the closest description of his photographic style.

Reputable photographers who are in demand, will charge a higher price for their work. Of course, not everyone has a large budget for wedding photography, but a bridal couple should never settle for lesser photo quality. A smaller wedding package with less camera time, but with the inclusion of high-quality professional photographs, presents a far greater value than hundreds of digital snapshots on a disk. Quantity is cheap – quality is priceless.

Is a CD a good way to store wedding (digital album), portrait and family photographs for many
years?
Recent studies in Europe and Canada have proven, that archival image storage is not possible in electronic imaging. Archivists of museums have detected image degradation within the short time frame of only 2 years on “archival” Cd’s. Film, on the other hand, will last well over 100 years. According to their studies, there will be a generation without any photographic memories. Their advice is, to have weddings, family portraits and anything of importance printed and not stored for a long time on a CD.

Don’t let your most precious memories slip away!

‘Photography by Marcus’ offers a complete line of professional wedding albums, as well as high-end photo albums for family and personal portraits. Wall portraits can be purchased completely matted and framed. Photo CD’s are available by request.

Marcus and his assistant have photographed many weddings, from Vancouver Island, to the grand ballrooms of Western Canada’s largest cities.
