The Native Americans have refused their photos to be taken, because they believed that cameras stole their souls. They probably don’t understand the technical side of the photography, but it seems like they have some instinctive sense of photographs.

Photographs deal with souls.

It does not steal souls, I guess, but I believe it can capture the essence of the soul. If you do not feel alright about the term “soul”, you can call it mind, spirit or whatever you prefer. When I see something through the camera, I always try to see that something inside of the body. It does not come with people only, but landscape also.

To be honest, it is not always successful. However, it makes my photos unique. I am not saying that I am the only one who tries to capture the soul. If somebody seeks something inside of body, they would find their own. Because, souls do not have a fixed figure.

It appears through communication.

Where the subjects’ soul meets mine, the image forms. Basically, I have an Asian background and am deeply interested in the spiritual world. I always try to capture my feeling, thought and soul through photography. That makes my photos unique, whether it suits people or not.

Don’―t try to be a role model. Just be yourself, like Mother Nature always does. Have confidence in yourself. I will find something unique inside you, and you will be able to see it with my photos. You are going to love it, because it is you.

The photographer, Peter Bae, is from Korea. He started his career as a TV director and has been through all kind of jobs in visual media. Now he settled down as a photographer.
