Proper Attire for the Groom & Groomsmen

by groomstand.com

The most important thing about what men should wear to a wedding, especially the groom and the groomsmen, is that it has to pass muster with the bride. The bride, no doubt, has been planning this day for months and months and has a particular concept of exactly how the day should look. Many things will dictate the style of dress that the groom and his wedding party should wear, from the color scheme to the level of formality. There are also quite a few groomsmen gifts that you can give that can be worn with the wedding day attire.

There are black-tie affairs, even more formal white-tie affairs, morning weddings, casual evening weddings, garden weddings, Vegas weddings and beach weddings – just to name a few! Each of these distinctive types of wedding ceremonies calls for different types of wedding wear for the groom and his groomsmen. Traditionally, a black tuxedo is the suit of choice for a wedding and is still the most versatile working well for all times of the day. Tuxedos are not all made the same; the lapels are a style focal point that you have some discretion over. There are peak, notch and shawl lapels, each with a different look. Many consider the shawl lapel to be the most formal of the tuxedo jacket. The tuxedo jacket is typically worn with a pleated shirt (no ruffles!), a bow tie, and cummerbund.

A formal wedding that takes place before 6pm has the option of wearing a morning coat. The morning coat is a full length jacket that is cut away in the front and worn with trousers and a waistcoat and ascot or tie. This is a very traditional look for the groom that dates back to the equestrians of the 19th century. Many men are opting to wear a fine business suit or even khakis and a sports jacket to their wedding. This loosening of protocol is just fine if all the parties are in agreement. In the same vein, wearing casual clothing (even shorts) for a beach wedding is appropriate just as jeans and boots paired with a jacket are mighty fine for a western-themed ceremony.

If you are looking for groomsmen gifts that can be used on the day of your wedding and make instant heirlooms as well, consider a pair of cufflinks or a tie clip. There are literally dozens and dozens of choices for cufflink groomsmen gifts; you can pick a pair to give as groomsmen gifts that reflect the theme of your big day. These groomsmen gifts can be engraved with the recipient’s monogram and will look dashing when paired with wedding day attire. Other ideas for wearable groomsmen gifts are the ties that you would like everyone to wear with their suits. Or, how about present your buddies with a fine leather wallet as a useful and utterly luxurious choice in groomsmen gifts.
